If you are a yoga teacher trying to grow your business, social media can be an incredible tool. Through social media, you can connect with students who truly resonate with your unique teaching style. In my case, that’s coffee lovers, arm balances and inversions enthusiasts and yogis that don’t mind a sprinkle of colorful language! Social media lets you share your practice, inspire others, and break down geographical barriers, while also building a recognizable brand and expanding your reach!
Because platforms are constantly evolving, it's easy to feel overwhelmed, but by focusing on just a few core principles, you can stay authentic while building a brand and sharing valuable content for your followers. Here are my three golden rules to grow your yoga business online!
The beauty of yoga is that it’s as unique as each teacher and student. When you teach what you love and feel knowledgeable about, your passion will naturally shine through your content! Even in a virtual space, people look for meaningful information and authenticity. Share what you know by heart - a favorite pose, a go-to sequence, or that one stretch that lifts your spirits. This honesty and simplicity will attract loyal followers who appreciate the way you make them feel.
Many people hesitate, thinking they should know more, do more or be more before sharing with the world. But consider social media as a casual conversation with friends over coffee; bring that same energy online, and your audience will connect with your passion and return to your account over and over again.
Once you start, consistency is the key! Just like learning handstand, growth on social media comes from showing up regularly: show up every day, even when you don’t feel like it!
The key in social media is to connect and engage and…connect and engage some more! Think of it like a friendship: connecting regularly builds familiarity and trust, while sporadic check-ins make strong bonds harder to form.
If time management to record or plan content is a challenge, try batching content. Choose a day a week to create several posts or plan your content in advance. This way, you’re always prepared, even when inspiration is low! A quick breathing exercise, a favorite pose, or a funny yoga story will keep you rolling!
You don’t need to be the Dalai Lama or share Nobel Prize-winning ideas. Social media is not the place for over-complicated, intellectual deep dives. Instead, focus on one tip, one idea, or one movement per post, especially if it’s something you’ve tried and found helpful! Clear, digestible advice keeps your content easy to follow.
For complex poses or concepts, break them down into simpler steps. For example, if you want to teach Visvamitrasana, you can first post about legs stability in Warrior II, then spinal and chest rotation, and you can finally add some extra “wow!” for hamstring and shoulders mobility with myofascial release before you put all the pieces together for the final pose. There’s a saying that if you truly understand something, you can explain it simply. Trust that your audience will see the value in your straightforward, relatable posts, and they’ll keep coming back!
In a crowded digital world, authenticity, consistency, and simplicity make all the difference! Social media may be ever-evolving, but staying true to your values will help you build a strong and lasting presence.
